Nachdem “Mr. Elbow” Ben Spies sich für die 2009er Saison wohl bei den Gehaltsverhandlungen verzockt hatte, hat er jetzt die Königsklasse des Motorrad Rennsports erreicht: Ab 2010 fährt er laut einer aktuellen Meldung von Yamaha Racing für das Yamaha Tech3 Team.

Eine grosse Überraschung ist das streng genommen nicht, schließlich hatte sich Spies in der World SBK / Superbike WM mehr als überzeugend dargestellt. Mit diversen Rennsiegen und als Serientäter beim Pole-Setting auch auf ihm bisher unbekannten Strecken zeigte er eindrucksvoll, was in ihm steckt. Zum Zeitpunkt dieses Artikels folgt er dem WM-führenden Noriyuki Haga (391 Punkte) mit nur 3 Punkten Abstand auf dem zweiten Platz. Somit hat er nach wie vor gute Chancen, in seiner Superbike-Rookie-Saison gleich den Titel des Weltmeisters mitzunehmen. Das wäre bitte für “Nitro-Nori”, der leider bisher stets “den ewigen Zweiten” markieren musste.

Für die Fans wird es nun spannend anzusehen, wo sich Spies in der MotoGP positionieren kann. Die Erwartungshaltung ist nach der Show in der Superbike WM natürlich groß. Gleichwohl: Es ist schon das eine oder andere fahrerische Genie in die MotoGP gekommen und dann hinter den Erwartungen zurück geblieben.

Sein MotoGP Einsatz findet zumindest auf dem Motorrad statt, dem die Fachwelt die beste Fahrbarkeit unterstellt: Der Yamaha YZR-M1. Er bekommt zwar keinen Platz im Werksteam (offensichtlich ist dieses ja mit Valentino Rossi und Jorge Lorenzo mehr als gut besetzt), kann aber auch bei Tech3 auf Support vom Yamaha Team hoffen. Die Unterstützung der Werksmannschaft hatten ja auch Colin Edwards und James Toseland in der laufenden Saison in Anspruch nehmen dürfen.

Bens Vertrag hat nun einen 2-Jahres Vertrag geschlossen, somit ist der ursprüngliche Plan (nämlich auch 2010 mit Yamaha in der Superbike WM zu fahren) hinfällig. Mit der Behandlung durch Yamaha scheint der “Texas Thunderstorm” sehr zufrieden:

I want to thank Yamaha globally for their faith in me, they have treated me like royalty! Yamaha just recently allowed me to rethink my contract for 2010-2011; I did sign for WSB for 2010 but after Indy I began thinking of the competition and my age versus waiting until 2011. This was not an easy decision, the Yamaha World Superbike Team crew and especially Massimo (Maio) Meregalli have been fantastic and it’s been great fun to put in a season together. I am hoping that I can give Maio, Laurens Klein Koerkamp and everyone else a championship to remember this year with me. My thanks also extend to ‘Infront’, the promoter of the WSB series, especially Paolo Ciabatti. I have enjoyed his series and this first year racing in Europe. Now I have two challenges, to complete this year giving my best and to move towards new goals in MotoGP. Herve Poncharal at Tech 3 is showing his support by allowing me to come on board with my Crew Chief Tom Houseworth and Gregory Wood, my mechanic, who have both been with me since AMA days. We will have learning curves to overcome next year but I am up for the new goal. I hope to have a good year and my goal is to try and stay in the top 6-8 which, given the talented line up, will be a tall order. With the world upside down, there is one constant for me and that’s Yamaha.

Von so einem vertrauensvollen und kooperativen Umgang zwischen Fahrer und Werk könnte sich Honda wohl eine Scheibe abschneiden, wenn man sich deren Umgang mit Rossi, Hayden und vielen anderen Ex-Hondafahrern ins Gedächtnis ruft…

Überraschend positiv ist sogar Laurens Klein Koerkamp von Yamaha Motor Europe, auch wenn er seine Zugpferd wohl ziehen lassen muss:

Of course we’re sorry to see Ben leave Yamaha’s World Superbike program and we are currently enjoying a fantastic season with him, but it’s clear that it’s the right decision for Ben’s career and for Yamaha. One of Yamaha’s goals is to bring up future MotoGP talent through Superbike and it is satisfying for us to see that this rider development route is working. Before he moves we still have some serious business to finish with Ben this year at the remaining two rounds!

Although Ben will be missed I have no doubt that our new World Superbike line-up for next year will see us once again challenging for the title. We will be cheering loudly for Ben in MotoGP and we look forward to seeing him on the YZR-M1.

Klingt so, als hätte man bei Yamaha “das grosse Ganze” im Kopf und als sei Teamwork dort kein Fremdwort – was ein guter Grund für die aktuelle Erfolgsserie auf allen Schauplätzen sein könnte…

Congratulations, Ben – you’ll be surely heating up the MotoGP Races
